by Paul Sumner The following texts reveal the New Testament emphasis on the resurrection of Yeshua from the dead. They show the centrality of the resurrection in the sermons of the apostles in Acts and in Paul's letters. In later NT works, such as Hebrews and Revelation, it was a standard doctrine within the Messianic message to Israel and the Gentile world. This study focuses on who and/or what raised Yeshua. In Romans 6:4 the instrument of raising Yeshua is God's Glory (Grk, doxa; Heb, kavod). In 1 Corinthians 6:14 it is God's Power (Grk, dunamis; Heb, gevurah). In Romans 8:11 it is God's Spirit (Grk, pneuma; Heb, ruach). • God's Glory • God's Power • God's Spirit Most often, Yeshua's raising was a passive event: "After I have been raised..." (Matt 26:32). The NT says God the Father initiated the action ("God raised him"). And the alternative reading of 1 Peter 3:18 has: "...he was put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit" (so CSB, NKJV, Geneva-1599, JNT-Stern). In other passages, we read that the power and will to resurrect Yeshua resides in himself. Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.... He was speaking of the temple of his body. (John 2:19, 21) I have authority [exousia] to lay [my life] down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from my Father. (John 10:18) He has this prerogative from God, the Father. It did not emerge from his own will: The Son can do nothing of himself... I can do nothing on my own initiative. (John 5:19, 30) I do not seek my own will, but the will of the One who sent me. (John 5:30) I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him who sent me. (John 6:38) Note also the Subject and Object in 1 Corinthians 6:14: "God raised the Lord." This distinction between the Father (God) and Yeshua ("the Lord") is a keynote of the Gospel. Acts 2:24 —God raised him up again, putting an end to the agony of death. Acts 2:32 —This Yeshua God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. Acts 3:15 —the Prince of Life [is] the one whom God raised from the dead. Acts 4:10 —Yeshua Messiah the Nazarene...whom God raised from the dead. Acts 10:40 —God raised him up on the third day, and granted that he should become visible. Acts 13:30 —God raised him from the dead. Acts 13:33 —God had fulfilled his promise to our children in that he raised up Yeshua. Acts 13:34 —He raised him up from the dead, no more to return to decay. Acts 13:37 —He whom God raised up did not undergo decay. Acts 17:31 —He fixed a day in which he will judge the world...through a man whom he has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising him from the dead. Romans 4:24 —[we are] those who believe in him who raised Yeshua from the dead. Romans 6:4 —Messiah was raised from the dead by the Glory of the Father. Romans 8:11 —He who raised Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies by his Spirit. Romans 8:34 —Messiah Yeshua is he who died, yes, rather who was raised. Romans 10:9 —If you...believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. [Top] 1 Corinthians 6:14 —God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up by his Power. 1 Corinthians 15:15 —God...raised Messiah. 2 Corinthians 4:14 —He who raised the Lord Yeshua will raise us also with Yeshua and will present us with you. Galatians 1:1 —Paul...sent...by Yeshua Messiah, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead. Ephesians 1:20 —He raised him from the dead, and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places. Ephesians 2:4, 6 —God...raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly places, in Messiah Yeshua. Colossians 2:12 —You were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. 1 Thessalonians 1:10 —To wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, that is Yeshua, who delivers us from the wrath to come. Hebrews 13:20 —The God of peace...brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Yeshua our Lord. 1 Peter 1:21—Through him [you] are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory.
