Colossians 3 |
The apostle Paul frequently extended principles of the Torah to daily “Messianic” life. The passage below was written to a congregation of Jewish and Gentile disciples of Yeshua in the town of Colossae in southern Asia (now SW Turkey). In it, Paul draws upon portions of the "Shema" passage in Deuteronomy 6 to instruct these people how to walk in their faith. |
Deuteronomy 6 Colossians 3 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart, (v. 6) Let the word of Messiah richly dwell within you, (v. 16a) and you shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk in your way and when you lie down and when you rise up. (7) with all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (16b) And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. (8) And whatever you do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Yeshuah, giving thanks through him to God the Father. (17) And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (9) ["house rules"—vv. 18-21]
Wives, be subject to your husbands…
Husbands, love your wives…
Children, be obedient to your parents…
Fathers, do not provoke your children…
Slaves, in all things obey…You shall fear only the LORD your God (13a) Fearing the Lord…(22) and you shall worship him (13b) Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men (23) and swear by his name. (13c) It is the Lord Messiah whom you serve. (24)
